It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dean Emeritus Warren Kitts. Dean Kitts passed away peacefully on September 20 with his family nearby.
Dr. Kitts joined UBC in 1953 in the Department of Animal Husbandry, and was named Professor in 1965. He was appointed Chair of the Department of Animal Science in 1967, and of the Department of Poultry Science in 1968. Dr. Kitts become Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in 1976, and served as Dean until his retirement in 1984.
During Dean Kitts’ tenure new programs such as Landscape Architecture and Cooperative Education were introduced; the Faculty grew, and there was a renewed emphasis on continuing education and extension. He believed that the Faculty must expand from University-centred teaching and research, to include teaching and consultation throughout the agricultural industry and province. A well-known expert in animal nutrition and physiology, he had a particular interest in applied animal production studies, animal endocrinology and enzymology, and animal waste studies. He served as President of the Canadian Society of Animal Science and in 1974 was elected a Fellow of the Agricultural Institute of Canada in recognition of his contributions to Canadian agriculture.
We extend our greatest sympathies to Associate Dean, Research, David Kitts, his mother Eileen, and their family. The Memorial Service for Warren will be held on Monday, September 24, 2012 at 11:00 am at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, B.C.
