American Egg Board Research Award
Assistant Professor Darin Bennett was awarded the American Egg Board Research Award at the 2012 Poultry Science Annual Meeting in Athens, Georgia in July 2012. The award is given to increase the interest in research pertaining to egg science technology or marketing that has a bearing on egg or spent hen utilization, and is presented to an author for a manuscript published during the preceding year. Bennett published two papers in the journal Poultry Science in 2010/11, including Effect of diatomaceous earth on parasite load, egg production and egg quality of free-range organic laying hens and Selenium enrichment of table eggs.
CSSS Soil Science for Society Award
This award is given by the Canadian Society of Soil Science (CSSS) to a scientist who has made an outstanding contribution towards promoting soil science to the general public. Associate Professor Maja Krzic’s commitment in bringing soil science to students, community organizations, and members of the general public through the Virtual Soil Science Learning Resource initiative (http://soilweb.landfood.ubc.ca/promo/) embodies the spirit of this award.
The award was presented to Krzic at the CSSS annual conference in Quebec City in early June.
C.F. Bentley Award
MSc soil science student, Alisha Hackinen won the third place C.F. Bentley Award for best student oral presentation at the Canadian Society of Soil Science (CSSS) conference in Quebec City recently. This award was initiated in 1983 to encourage and recognize excellence in oral presentations by students at the CSSS Annual Meetings.
Canadian Society of Animal Science Award
Congratulations to Professor von Keyserlingk for earning the Canadian Animal Industries Award in Extension and Public Service, from the Canadian Society of Animal Science. The award is given to a CSAS member to recognise outstanding service to the animal industries of Canada in technology transfer, leadership and education in animal production. The award, sponsored by the Dairy Farmers of Canada, the Canadian Pork Council, the Chicken Farmers of Canada, and the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association is in the form of a plaque and a cheque. The award was presented in July at the joint annual meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.
UBC Development and Alumni Award
Director of Development Larry Sproul received the UBC Development and Alumni Engagement’s annual Winnie Award in May. The theme of this year’s award was “A Whale of a Coach”. Sproul was chosen for his generosity with his time and support, creating a positive environment for success, and providing exceptional insight, motivation and mentorship to his team.
