For the third year in a row, students in UBC’s Land and Food Systems 350 course partnered with Okanagan College to help develop the Demonstration Garden located in Vernon. The LFS students researched how to make the garden useful to farmers in the Okanagan region and how it could be integrated with and supported by the Regional District of North Okanagan’s composting and water saving initiatives.
In 2010/11, 1,642 UBC students participated in curricular community service learning and community-based research through the UBC Community Learning Initiative and the UBC Learning Exchange. These students worked with 90 non-profit organizations, 23 public schools and 21 small- to medium-sized businesses.
