American Journal of Applied Economics
Congratulations to Professor Jim Vercammen on his appointment as Editor of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics. Beginning in August 2013, Jim – the first Canadian to hold the position – will co-edit the journal with three other editors, including Professor JunJie Wu of Oregon State University.
Animal Welfare Program paper in Nature
Animal Welfare graduate student Devina Wong’s paper “Rodent Euthanasia Methods Under Scrutiny” received favourable coverage in the journal Nature in December. AW PhD candidate Joanna Makowska and Professor Dan Weary co-authored the paper.
Western Canadian Dairy Seminar Award of Merit 2013
Prof. Jim Thompson was presented with the Western Canadian Dairy Seminar Award of Merit 2013 at the Western Canadian Dairy Seminar in Red Deer, Alberta in early March. Jim received the award for his on-going commitment to ensuring a strong dairy cattle education and research program in Western Canada.
PhD Students Win Student Research Presentation Competition
Gosia Zobel and Katy Proudfoot participated in the competitive student research presentations at the Western Canadian Dairy Seminar in March. Gosia and Katy split first prize for their presentations on minimizing the incidence of dairy cow udder health issues during late pregnancy, and dairy cows seeking isolation during calving, respectively.
Killam Teaching Award
Karol Traviss, Senior Lecturer, Food, Nutrition and Health, received a 2011/2012 Killam Teaching Award. The prizes are awarded annually, from the Killam Endowment Fund, to faculty nominated by students, colleagues, and alumni in recognition of excellence in teaching.
Killam Graduate Assistant Teaching Award
MSc Soil Science student Emma Holmes received the Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award for 2011/2012. The annual award recognizes the valuable role that teaching assistants play in our undergraduate programs.
Richards Service Award
Professor Emeritus Les Lavkulich received the 2012 Richards Service Award. The award, name in honour of Dean Emeritus Jim Richards, is given annually to an LFS faculty member who exemplifies the qualities of outstanding service in their work with faculty, staff and students. Les has been an incredible mentor to faculty, staff and students for more than forty years. He won the UBC Killam Teaching Prize in 1994 for excellence in teaching.
Shynkaryk Service Award
This year’s recipient of the Shynkaryk award is Barb Wakal, administrative support in the FNH building. This award is presented annually to a staff member who consistently goes above and beyond in their work. Barb provides excellent service and keeps everything on track. She has exceptional organizational skills and she is always professional, patient and helpful.
