Prof. David Fraser co-authors paper in Science
Prof. David Fraser is co-author of a paper on “Sustainable Intensification in Agriculture: Premises and Policies” in the journal Science, released in July. A policy known as sustainable intensification could help meet the challenges of increasing demands for food from a growing global population.
Professor Andy Black Elected Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS)
Professor Andy Black was elected Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) in January for outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or hydrologic sciences or their applications during a substantial period of years. The Fellow Award was made at the AMS annual meeting in Austin, Texas earlier this year.
Dietitians of Canada Fellowship Program
Sessional Lecture Gerry Kasten and Senior Instructor Karol Traviss received the Dietitians of Canada Fellow designation at the National Conference in June. The DC Fellowship program promotes excellence in dietetics by recognizing the outstanding contributions of members in areas of educational and professional enhancement; career achievements; initiative and innovation; and leadership. 2013 AICF Douglas McRorie Memorial Scholarship
Two LFS students were awarded the 2013 AICF Douglas McRorie Memorial Scholarship from the Agricultural Institute of Canada (AICF) in April. Valeria Castellanos Hurtado, a PhD candidate in Integrated Studies, received the $5,000 PhD level award. Ishrat Gadhok, currently enrolled in the Masters of Food and Resource Economics Program, is one of two recipients of a $3,000 award at the Masters level.
Elanco Award for Excellence in Dairy Science
Dr. Marina (Nina) von Keyserlingk was awarded the Elanco Award for Excellence in Dairy Science from the American Dairy Science Association’s (ADSA) in July. The Award recognizes outstanding research in dairy production or manufacturing, contributing to improvement or care of dairy cattle, development and improvement of processes, products, equipment, methods, handling, and sanitation.
2013 Metacam 20 Bovine Welfare Award
Drs. von Keyserlingk and Weary recently received the 2013 Metacam 20 Bovine Welfare Award in recognition of their achievements in advancing the welfare of animals via leadership, public service, education, research/product development, and/or advocacy.
The Canada Foundation for Innovation
The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) invited Dr. Hennie van Vuuren, Director of the UBC Wine Research Centre, to take part in a special networking opportunity on Parliament Hill in February. Dr. van Vuuren was one of five scientists in Canada asked to meet with more than 50 Parliamentarians, Senators and other guests about what they have accomplished with Federal research support.
Western Canadian Dairy Seminar Award of Merit 2013
Prof. Jim Thompson was presented with the Western Canadian Dairy Seminar Award of Merit 2013 at the Western Canadian Dairy Seminar in Red Deer, Alberta in early March. Jim received the award for his on-going commitment to ensuring a strong dairy cattle education and research program in Western Canada.
UBC 25 Year Club
LFS Research Technician Martin Hilmer was inducted into UBC’s 25 Year Club in May. The UBC 25 Year Club was established in 1971 to recognize non-faculty staff with 25 years of uninterrupted or accumulated service. Other LFS staff who have reached this milestone in recent years include Nancy Brard, Sylvia Leung, Jurgen Pelke and Seane Trehearne.
