Dr. Karl C. Ivarson Agricultural Scholarship
Food Science PhD student Jovana Kovacevic was awarded a Dr. Karl C. Ivarson Agricultural Scholarship, worth $15,000, from the Agricultural Institute of Canada Foundation (AICF). Kovacevic’s research focuses on a foodborne pathogen that is of critical importance to the agriculture industry, Listeria monocytogenes (Lm).
UBC International Community Achievement Award
Liheng Sun, an undergraduate in our Applied Biology program, received a 2013 UBC International Community Achievement Award. Up to forty awards of $3,000 each are available to continuing international undergraduate students who have demonstrated leadership in one or more of the following areas: community service, international engagement, intercultural understanding, promotion of diversity, intellectual pursuits, and artistic or athletic endeavours.
David Currey Scholarship for Applied Biology
Applied Biology undergraduates Jennifer Berney, Alex Boo, Cathy El-Hinn, Kelvin Kou, Ou Priebjrivat and Melanie Sylvestre each received a David Currey Scholarship for Applied Biology in 2013, worth up to $4,000. The scholarship, offered by H. David Currey, BASc (Agricultural Engineering) 1950, is for students in their second, third, or fourth year pursuing an undergraduate degree in Applied Biology within our Faculty. In addition to academic merit, consideration is given to qualities such as leadership skills, involvement in student affairs, extracurricular activities or community service.
Maja Krzic Receives Mentoring Award from the Association for Women Soil Scientists
Congratulations to Associate Professor Maja Krzic for receiving the 2013 AWSS Mentoring Award from the Association for Women Soil Scientists (AWSS). The award recognizes Krzic’s significant contributions to the education, professional growth, and achievement of many females in soil science. Nominations from past students and colleagues, who were greatly influenced by Krzic in their soils education and careers, played a large part in the committee’s unanimous decision. Krzic was presented with a plaque at the annual conference of the Soil Science Society of America in November 2013.
Shynkaryk Service Award
Computer Systems Coordinator Jinglie Dou received the 2013 Shynkaryk Service Award in December. This award is presented annually to a staff member who consistently goes above and beyond in their work. Dou received an overwhelming number of nomination letters from faculty and staff members. For more than 15 years, he has provided the Faculty with first class technical support as part of the LFS Learning Centre.
The Richards Service Award
The 2013 Richards Service Award was presented to Dean Murray Isman in recognition of his outstanding service to the Faculty. The award, named in honour of Dean Emeritus Jim Richards, is given annually to LFS faculty members like Isman who consistently provide excellent service to students, faculty and staff. On top of his duties as Dean, he also teaches undergraduate and graduate courses, publishes research and review papers, and is often interviewed by the media for his expertise in entomology and toxicology.
Ventures 2014 Program
LFS alumni Emma Holmes (MSc, Soil Science), and Marc Schutzbank (M.Sc, ISLFS) were among those selected to take part in the Ventures 2014 program through the Coast Capital Savings Innovation Hub at UBC Sauder School of Business. The competition provides $60,000 to businesses for office space and an MBA intern for the summer. Holmes is a Coordinator at Skipper Otto, a Community Supported Fishery that connects local independent catchers directly to consumers, cutting out middlemen and increasing the income of the fishers, while Schutzbank is the Director of Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society, an organization that creates community engagement by transforming underutilized urban space into commercially productive farms.
Nelson Dinn appointed to Mainland Milk Producers Association Board
Nelson Dinn, UBC Dairy Education and Research Manager, was recently appointed a board member for the Mainland Milk Producers Association.
